How does handing over borrowed items work?

You book a box online, put the item in and close the door. Then send the other person the pick-up code or QR code, for example by WhatsApp, email or SMS. They open the box with their code and pick up independently. If the item should come back later, choose “Twice” (two uses).

What does it cost to lend something out?

One-time booking for the first 24 hours: XS €2.99, S €3.99, M €4.99, L €5.99. Each additional usage day costs €0.99. With “Twice”, two uses are booked (24 hours each): XS €4.99, S €5.99, M €6.99, L €7.99. Each additional day per use is €0.99. You always see the prices before booking.

How does the 2nd use work?

If you choose “Twice” (two uses), the 2nd use has its own drop-off and pick-up code. The other person first picks up the item and later puts it back in the box. After that, you can pick it up yourself. With a one-use booking, the booking ends after pick-up.

What can I hand over?

Anything that is permitted, clean, dry and fits into the selected box. Typical examples are tools, camera gear, books, clothes, smaller household items or keys. Food, liquids, dangerous substances, cash, jewellery and other particularly valuable items are not allowed. Details are set out in the [Terms and Conditions](/terms-and-conditions).

Which box size do I need?

For keys or flat small items, XS is usually enough. For books, clothes, tools or camera gear, S or M may fit depending on the size. For larger items, choose L. Available sizes are shown directly during booking. The door must close without pressure.

How secure is the handoff?

The box is opened with individual codes: drop-off code, pick-up code or QR code. Many partner locations have additional security measures, such as access control or video surveillance. Important: Only share codes and QR codes with the right person.

Do I need to share my address?

No. You choose a location nearby. The other person only sees the box location, not your home address. Useful when you lend something but do not want to send anyone to your home.

What happens if the item is not picked up or not put back?

If the other person does not pick up, you can retrieve the item yourself or extend the booking where available. If a borrowed item does not come back to the box, you sort that out directly with each other. gegenstand.de only provides the box. You can cancel as long as the booking has not yet been used. We refund the amount paid minus already incurred reservation, partner, payment-processing and technical-handling costs: €1.99 for a booking with one use, €2.99 for bookings with two uses. Once the box has been opened or an item has been dropped off or picked up, automatic cancellation is no longer possible. What happens if the box is defective or occupied on site?

If the box cannot be used on site, please contact support immediately or use the partner hotline shown at the location. We will review the case and, where possible, look for a suitable solution. If use was not possible due to a technical issue that you did not cause, we refund the booking amount according to the Terms and Conditions.

Can I use the box for other purposes?

Yes. You can also use gegenstand.de for [key handovers](/key-handover), [Kleinanzeigen sales](/classifieds-ebay-handover) or [luggage storage](/luggage-storage). Depending on the booking type, you can drop something off, pick something up or book two uses. You choose size, location and price directly during booking.

Freitags ist um 18 Uhr Schluss, montags geht es weiter — genau deine Arbeitszeit. Online bezahlen und bitten, das Gerät freitags in eine Box zu legen. Sonntagabend legst du es zurück, montags holt es der Laden.
